I try to Hackett

Who's excited?

Last night, we tried out the new El Toro Loco (former Los Compadres) with our friends, The Family K. Manny K has an incredibly impressive ability to sing theme songs from sitcoms. He's like a sitcom jukebox, that one! Brought to mind how much I wish Wings was still on the air in syndication. So I present to you...

My Top 5 TV Shows I Wish Were Still On. Somewhere. Anywhere.
  • Wings – The relationship between solid & dependable Joe Hackett and returning carefree brother Brian Hackett was ripe for humor. Add on the love triangle with lunch counter owner and former childhood friend/cello player Helen Chapel, well, you've got yourself a show! With the addition of Fay and her many dead husbands named George; Roy the competing airline owner with a greasy 'stache; Antonio V. Scarpacci, Italian cabdriver and hopeless romantic; Lowell Mather, mechanic for the planes with a tendency to be both dumb and brilliant (in a dumb way), the antics were unstoppable. Love this little show. It's in our Netflix queue right now. If only it was in the Instant Queue... So many dreams would be realized.
  • Just the Ten of Us – I have no idea if this holds up in re-viewing. But I LOVED it. It was on the famous (to a certain generation) TGIF block and it struck a chord in my young heart. A spin-off of Growing Pains, it told the story of a high school coach and his many children. The 4 oldest girls were who the stories really focused on. (Maybe that's why I loved it? I wasn't in high school yet and when you're young, you just want to be older. And wear makeup. And form an all girl singing group.) Although, were there really ten of them? I guess the mom did have a baby or two on her hip usually.
  • Sports Night – Where did this first show? I used to watch it on Comedy Central and thought it was great. You know, I don't remember a ton about the show as far as specific stories. But the cast was terrific, the writing was tight, and it was different. Plus, I think that was when I first met the brilliant William H. Macy. Maybe?
  • Blossom – Like yeah, for reals, hat and all. Blossom & Six's sense of style? Something else. With Joey Lawrence and the rest of the fam, they taught us many lessons of life, love, and hats. Lots and lots of hats. This is where I learned some people – Nick Russo – could be grownup but not have "real" jobs. As a musician, how did he support all those people? House must have been payed off. This is another that I'm not too sure if it's ability to stand the test of time. But I'm sure interested to visit.
  • Christy – This is maybe where I lose some people. (That assumes that I haven't already.) It starred Kellie Martin from Life Goes on. (I will ever feel connected to her because her character's name was Becca on that show. Also, she was in a Lifetime-esque move with Jonathan Brandis that I weirdly LOVE.) It's the story of teacher Christy Huddleston arriving in an Appalachian village in Cutter Gap, TN. They're folksy mountain folks that don't trust her outsider ways. She's soon torn between the local preacher and Scottish doctor. Yay, love triangle! The book was wonderful and I think my mom might own these on dvd. (We should watch some next time I'm home, mama!)
Master of the Obvious Special Mentions: Felicity, where for art thou??? My So-Called Life. Of course. Boy Meets World was a WONDERFUL treat and I think it's still on at like 6am. But I'm not getting up for that and there's no room for it on the DVR so let's move it to a place of more prominence!

And if we're going older, My Perfect Nick at Nite Lineup would be: The Mary Tyler Moore Show, The Dick Van Dyke Show, The Bob Newhart Show, Rhoda, Taxi, I Love Lucy, Get Smart, The Carol Burnett Show, and possibly a little sprinkling of the George Burns & Gracie Allen Show.

Phew... It's really good to get that off my chest.

Guess that's about it for today. Remember, Internettie, there are people with real problems out there. So don't get your drawers all wrinkly if you get some water on your phone. It might just dry. So be patient! Wait and see. And love the ones around you.

Oh, and a little bonus – this is my cat Claudette's face after I told her we were thinking of getting another dog soon...

And I ran out of her food the same day
It's hard out there for a kitty
Don't worry though, she showed me
Dumped my apology can of tuna in her water bowl
Sassy kat
