Internettie, I missed you so! FINALLY, here we are, together again! (Are you annoyed with me calling you Internettie yet? Nicknames can be so annoying... I know. In high school chemistry, my friends called me Beaker. HiLARIOUS.)
What a great Easter weekend! The Husband and I went to Kansas City to visit Husband's sister and her fam. They have 3 kids and that just made it all the more fun. The memories linger – my "temporary" tattoo is still holding on for dear life.
I read 2 books on the drive. (Well, almost 2 books.) A couple of my un-selected book club picks. The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls. Crazy good and such a peak into a childhood FAR from mine.
– Synopsis from Amazon: Walls's parents – just two of the unforgettable characters in this excellent, unusual book – were a matched pair of eccentrics, and raising four children didn't conventionalize either of them. Her father was a self-taught man, a would-be inventor who could stay longer at a poker table than at most jobs and had "a little bit of a drinking situation," as her mother put it. The Walls children learned to support themselves, eating out of trashcans at school or painting their skin so the holes in their pants didn't show. One by one, each child escaped to New York City. Still, it wasn't long before their parents appeared on their doorsteps. "Why not?" Mom said. "Being homeless is an adventure."
I'm almost done with The 19th Wife now too. I first got slightly obsessed with the whole Mormon/polygamist thing a year or two ago when the raid happened on that Texas Yearning for Zion cult. Yeah, cult. I said it. (Note: I do separate Mormonism from the whole Polygamist thing. It may have blossomed from the same bud but it def is not the same thing in modern times.)
Now, it's really no skin off my nose when it comes to religion. Thank you, America.... I believe what I believe and will do what I do. You believe whatever you want and do whatcha do. And at the end of the day, we'll all reap whatever we decided to sew. BUT it bothers me a LOT when people are terrorized into belief and blackmailed by a birthright.
The whole LDS/polygamy thing is sad but fascinating. It took such a comfortable, familiar thing, Christianity, as the "root". And twisted it just enough to serve his (Joseph Smith for start) own purposes. And the real kicker with the whole polygamist thing is that it forces the first wife to be complicit (because the first wife has to "approve" of the other wives) because that's part of her TICKET TO HEAVEN.
Well, I'm enjoying the book TONS and cuz it's pretty different and very interesting. A modern polygamist murder mystery is woven into a recounting of Brigham Young's 19th wife divorcing him and propelling polygamy into the forefront and it being outlawed.
Anyhoo, let's move along now, shall we, 'Nettie? (And heh, drop me a line if you'd like to borrow either book and roll around in them for yourself.)
Yesterday, I had a fabulous gyro for lunch. Elliott's on Second. If you didn't know, nowwww you do. Although known for it's burgers, Elliotts makes quite the tasty gyro. I got the new "Deep Sea G" with red pepper hummus and habanero sauce. Something different and super-yum. Say hello –
Convinced now? They don't know the treasure they are holding. ('Course, it does bother some people when they sweat while they eat. It's got a little kick.)
Great eating day continued with some grilling. I love this time of year soooooo much. It's not hot yet. You're coming fresh off the winter cold which makes you appreciate it so much more. And eating outside is just what the cool people do.
My first time buying short ribs. I rubbed on a little kosher salt and then that Memphis Rub on them. And they were really good! I was a little surprised actually that they were so juicy and yum. (When you think of ribs, it seems like you need to smoke them.)
So we had a nice night of feasting and catching up on the DVR last night. And now we're already on to Wednesday. Yayyy! This week is going so quickly. Project Runway will be here before we know it.
Speaking of P.R., did you catch it last week, 'Nettie? LOVED that Anthony's back and was a co-winner! Emilioth and his tying for first was great. Loved them both! Would post pics but I'm having trouble with you, Internettie. Get it together! (Seriously... If it seems like my hearts not in it it's because blogspot has given me such a time.)
Alright. Signing off for now. Much excitement to come though! The pup is turning 1 and we're having a little party. So dad, this puppy pic is for you!
Have a great Wednesday, 'Nettie! See ya again very soon.
